What to Do When Your Internet Stops Working

You sit down to use your computer and everything seems fine — until you try to open a website or send an email and nothing works. The internet is not loading. Before you call your internet provider, there are a few simple things to try that fix the problem most of the time.

Step One: Check the Obvious Things First

  • Is your Wi-Fi or cable connection actually turned on? Look for the Wi-Fi symbol in the bottom-right corner of your screen (Windows) or top-right (Mac). It should look like a fan shape. If there is an X or an exclamation mark on it, something is disconnected.
  • Is the problem only on one website? Try opening a different site. If one site loads but another does not, the problem is with that specific website, not your internet.
  • Is the problem on all your devices? If your phone works fine on the same Wi-Fi, the issue is likely with your computer, not the internet itself.

Step Two: Restart Your Router

The single most effective fix for internet problems is restarting your router — the small box that your internet provider gave you. Here is how:

  • Unplug it from the wall socket.
  • Wait a full 30 seconds.
  • Plug it back in.
  • Wait about two minutes for it to fully reconnect.

This works because routers sometimes get confused after running for a long time. Restarting clears that confusion.

Step Three: Restart Your Computer

If the router restart did not help, restart your computer. This refreshes the connection your computer has been trying to use and often solves the issue on its own.

Step Four: Forget and Reconnect to Your Wi-Fi

Sometimes your computer remembers old connection details that no longer work. On Windows, click the Wi-Fi icon, find your network name, click Forget, and then reconnect by entering your password again. On a Mac, go to System Settings, then Wi-Fi, click your network, and choose Forget This Network.

When to Call Your Internet Provider

If none of these steps work, the problem is probably on their end. Call the number on your bill. They can check from their side whether your connection is active and send someone if needed.

Most internet outages are temporary and fix themselves. These steps will solve the majority of everyday problems without any technical knowledge at all.
