How to Fix the Most Common Video Call Problems

Video calls are now a normal part of life — keeping in touch with family, attending appointments, or joining a meeting. But many people have experienced the embarrassment of a bad call: a frozen screen, no sound, or a background that reveals a messy room. Most of these problems are avoidable.

Fix a slow or freezing video call

The most common cause of poor video quality is a slow internet connection. Before making an important call, run a quick speed test — search for “internet speed test” and click the first result. You need at least 5Mbps download and upload speed for a smooth video call. If your speed is lower than that:

  • Move closer to your router. Distance weakens the signal significantly.
  • Ask others in the household to stop streaming video while you are on the call — this frees up bandwidth.
  • If possible, connect to the router with an ethernet cable instead of Wi-Fi for a more stable connection.

When no one can hear you

If other people on the call cannot hear you, the first thing to check is whether you are muted. Every video call app has a microphone button — make sure it is not crossed out or red. Next, check whether the app has permission to use your microphone. On a phone, go to Settings, find the video call app, and make sure Microphone is set to On or Always. On a computer, the app may prompt you the first time it needs microphone access — if you clicked Deny, you will need to go into settings to change it.

When you cannot hear anyone else

Check your volume first — press the volume up button on your phone or check the volume on your computer. Then check that the right speaker is selected. On a computer, look for an audio icon in the video call app that lets you choose between speakers, headphones, and other audio outputs. On a phone, if you are using headphones, make sure they are properly connected.

Dealing with a distracting background

Most video call apps — Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, and WhatsApp — now offer background blur or virtual backgrounds. Look for a settings icon or the three dots while on a call and look for Background or Video Settings. Background blur is the most reliable option and makes any room look professional without needing a green screen.

Lighting makes a bigger difference than you think

If people say your image is dark or hard to see, the problem is almost always lighting. Sit facing a window or a lamp rather than having the light source behind you. A bright window behind you turns you into a silhouette. Facing the light means your face is well lit and easy to see — no special equipment needed.
