If your computer or phone runs out of space, things slow down and you can’t save new files or take more photos. But you might not need to buy more storage right away. There are a few things you can do right now to free up space without losing anything important.
Find Out What’s Taking Up Space
Before you start deleting things, it helps to know where the space is going. On a Windows computer, open Settings, go to System, then Storage, and it will show you a breakdown. On a Mac, click the Apple logo, then About This Mac, then Storage. On a phone, check under Settings and look for Storage. You’ll usually find that a few things — like photos, videos, or apps — are taking up most of the room.
Delete Apps You No Longer Use
Many people have apps they installed once and never opened again. Go through your apps and delete anything you haven’t used in the last few months. Each one can free up a surprising amount of space, especially games or big apps.
Move Photos to the Cloud
Photos and videos are often the biggest space users. Services like Google Photos or iCloud let you store photos online and remove them from your device. Your pictures are still safe and you can see them any time — they’re just not taking up space on your phone or computer.
Empty the Recycle Bin or Trash
When you delete a file, it goes to the Recycle Bin (Windows) or Trash (Mac/iPhone). It still takes up space until you empty that bin. Right-click the Recycle Bin on your desktop and choose “Empty Recycle Bin” to permanently clear those files out.
Clear Downloads Folders
The Downloads folder on your computer fills up over time with things you only needed once — PDFs, installer files, pictures you saved from the web. Go through it and delete anything you don’t need anymore. This is often one of the fastest ways to free up space.
Don’t Panic About Percentage
Most devices start to slow down when storage is around 90% or more full. If you’re below that, you’re probably fine. Regular maintenance — clearing downloads, removing old apps, and backing up photos — keeps things running smoothly without needing to spend money on more storage.
