How to Stop Windows from Restarting on Its Own

Windows restarting itself without warning is one of the more disruptive experiences in everyday computing. You lose unsaved work, background processes get interrupted, and it rarely happens at a convenient time. There are a few common causes, and each has a straightforward fix.

Windows Update Is the Most Common Cause

Windows Update is configured by default to install updates and then restart automatically when they are ready. On Windows 10 and 11, you can change this behaviour without turning off updates entirely.

Open Settings, then go to Windows Update, then Advanced Options. Here you can set Active Hours — the time window during which Windows will not automatically restart. Setting active hours to cover your normal working day prevents most unwanted restarts. The Notify to Schedule Restart option lets you choose when an update-related restart happens rather than having it happen automatically.

Fast Startup and Sleep Settings

Windows sometimes restarts rather than returning from sleep if Fast Startup is causing conflicts. To disable Fast Startup: open Control Panel, then Power Options, then Choose what the power buttons do. Uncheck Turn on fast startup and save. This is worth trying if your machine restarts when it should be waking from sleep.

Driver or Hardware Issues

If Windows restarts unexpectedly rather than on a schedule, it may be a crash that happens too quickly to show an error — a Blue Screen of Death that appears and disappears. Windows logs these events. Search for Event Viewer in the Start menu, then navigate to Windows Logs, then System. Look for Critical entries close to when the unexpected restarts occurred. The error code or description can help you identify whether a driver or hardware component is responsible.

Checking Scheduled Tasks

Less commonly, a scheduled task can trigger a restart. Search for Task Scheduler in the Start menu, then look under Task Scheduler Library for any tasks set to restart the machine. These are usually legitimate system tasks, but occasionally software installs a scheduled restart that persists longer than intended.

Quick Summary of Fixes

Set active hours so Windows Update does not restart during your working day. Consider disabling Fast Startup if the restarts happen when waking from sleep. Use Event Viewer to check for crash logs if the restarts are unscheduled. Most unexpected Windows restarts fall into one of these three categories.
